Charles Henri Nicolas Prince of de Nassau-Siegen (1745–1809), colonel in the French army, later grandee and general of the Spanish army, who was also awarded a Polish noble title, gained fame in Europe due to his participation in a voyage around the world in the years 1766–69 under the leadership of Louis Antoine de Bougainville. The painting, made in 1784, shows an episode from that journey. … [D. Juszczak, H. Małachowicz, The Stanisław August Collection of Paintings at the Royal Łazienki.
