This excellent engraved portrait dating from 1792 shows Stanisław August in a coat with the Orders of the White and Black Eagles. The author of the portrait may have been inspired by the Portrait of Stanisław August with a Bust of Pope Pius VI known from the numerous copies and repetitions, the original of which, painted in 1789 by Marcello Bacciarelli, is now owned by the Royal Castle in Warsaw.
Pierre Alexandre Tardieu (1756–1844), was a French engraver who studied at the academies in Saint Petersburg and in Milan. In the many portraits he made based on painted originals, he reflected the character and style of the artist, skilfully imitating the painterly qualities of the original and the individuality of the person portrayed.
