A potpourri vessel held mixtures of aromatic substances, herbs, dried flower petals, leaves, etc., mixed with spices, allowing their scent to diffuse through palace interiors. Vases with openwork sides became fashionable in France in the early eighteenth century, initially serving a pragmatic purpose — protecting against unhealthy air and the spread of diseases — before pleasure in fragrance took precedence and the vessels themselves grew increasingly refined in form.
