Andrzej Mokronowski of the Bogoria coat of arms (1713–84), Marshal of the Sejm 1776 and Sejm Deputy for Warsaw, Voivode of Masovia in 1781, for many years the lover of the king’s sister, Izabela, whom he married in 1771 after the death of her husband, Jan Klemens Branicki. He was a protegé of Stanisław August, as is demonstrated by the unprecedented event which took place on 31 October 1776, the last day of the meeting of the Sejm. The retiring Marshal Mokronowski was called to the throne where the king personally awarded him the Order of the White Eagle … . The king’s fondness for Mokronowski is also reflected in the fact that his portrait was on the list of paintings the king planned to take to Grodno after his abdication. …
Marcello Bacciarelli made a copy of the portrait, probably at the king’s behest. He added the riband of the Order of the White Eagle on his chest, which Mokronowski was awarded in 1776, i.e. six years after he sat for Colson (National Museum in Poznań … ). Bacciarelli omitted the outlines of the tents which are visible in the background of the original and which allude to the sitter’s military career—he was a major general of both French and Polish armies.
