Two banners can be seen above the heads of fighting soldiers—sketchily rendered they do not enable any of the details to be deciphered, but it would seem that on the left, the small banner is green and therefore Turkish, while the larger one of the right is red and white and therefore the Imperial flag. In which case Stanisław Iskierski (S. Iskierski, Katalog galerii obrazów Pałacu w Łazienkach w Warszawie, Warsaw 1931, no. 100), who described the cavalry as that of the Imperial army, would be correct. It is possible that Querfurt, who often painted skirmishes with the Turks, was alluding to the Imperial War with Turkey, which ended in 1739, but it is also possible that it is only a pretext to colour a typical battalistic scene with exotic elements. … [D.
