Verdussen’s oeuvre and its chronology have not yet been discussed. His work is eclectic in style and there are visible references to: 17th-century Dutch Italianate genre paintings (e.g. Johannes Lingelbach), French rococo paintings of the Nicolas Lancret type and battle scenes by the Frenchman, Jean-Baptiste Martin the Younger, and the Flemish artist, Adam Frans van der Meulen, who was active in France. Battle scenes, skirmishes and military camps dominate the artist’s oeuvre. Verdussen was connected with the court of Carlo Emanuele III di Savoia, king of Sardinia, for whom he painted military scenes, and whom he accompanied to war, as described in Thieme and Becker’s lexicon (U. Thieme, F. Becker, Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart, vol. 34, Leipzig 1926).

The genre scenes, like the pair of Łazienki paintings, are much rarer in Verdussen’s work than battle and camp scenes. Stylistically, the closest to the Łazienki painting is Horse Market from the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Alte Pinakothek in Munich (inv. no. 1106). [D. Juszczak, H. Małachowicz, The Stanisław August Collection of Paintings at the Royal Łazienki. Catalogue, Royal Łazienki Museum, Warsaw 2016, no. 107, p. 391.]
