The medal was part of Prussia’s propaganda campaign during the Great Sejm, when Prussia posed as an ally of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The depiction of the monument to Jan III Sobieski and the commemoration of the Sejm’s resolution to expand the army to 100,000 soldiers were intended to stir anti-Russian sentiment among parliamentarians and the Warsaw public. The gold medal was presented to the king; silver ones to the Sejm marshals; bronze ones were distributed widely across the capital.
