European hedgehog
Erinaceus europaeus
It is quite a secretive mammal in the Łazienki gardens. Most often, in can be encountered at dawn or dusk, when its daily activity peaks. It feeds on insects, earthworms, snails and even small vertebrates. Immediately after birth, a young hedgehog has soft spikes hidden under the skin, which are then replaced with sharper and larger ones, providing protection the animal against predators. The hedgehog needs a rich undergrowth which enables it to winter.
