Red squirrel
Sciurus vulgaris
The squirrel is the most famous rodent of the Royal Łazienki Park. The population of this species counts about 200 specimens. As with all rodents, the teeth of the squirrel are growing throughout its life, so it must eat hard food (e.g. nuts in shell) to grind them. The squirrel does not fall into winter sleep, but its activity in winter may be slightly reduced. In addition to vegetable feed, the squirrel enjoys eating insects, birds’ eggs or even their chicks. It builds its nests in tree hollows, nesting boxes or between branches of trees.
