Common chaffinch
Fringilla coelebs
The common chaffinch is a representative of Fringillidae family. It is a common bird of Polish forests and parks. It builds characteristic nests covered with moss or lichens to better mask them for predators. Since early spring, in the gardens visitors can hear the common chaffinches singing, when males sit down on low branches or on stone protruding from the ground. The male’s upper head and neck are ashen and the chest is rust-coloured, while the rump is bright green. The female’s colours are more subdued to avoid attracting attention while laying eggs and caring for the chicks.
