Great spotted woodpecker
Dendrocopos major
The great spotted woodpecker is a massive, multicoloured woodpecker. The sexual dimorphism is reflected in the red back of the male’s head, which is uniformly black in the female. Known for building forges, that putting cones in the hollows of the bark (also of deciduous trees) and eating seeds out of them, and then dropping empty cones under a given tree. In spring, when taking over territories, it is very loud; it sings a lot and drums in short series. Young birds in the hollows are also noisy and easy to spot. The species can be distinguished from the Syrian woodpecker, which can be regularly seen in the Łazienki gardens, by stronger colours of the bottom part of the tail, white colours on the extreme flight feathers, and a gap between the "whisker" running from the beak and the back of the head.
