European green woodpecker
Picus viridis
The European green woodpecker is the largest woodpecker nesting in the Royal Łazienki. The only larger woodpecker is the black woodpecker, however the hatching of that species hasn’t been observed in this areas for many years. The European green woodpecker is a kind of "bird anteater", because it loves to eat ants. Its long, sticky tongue is perfect for the penetration of ant heaps. Because of this special liking, most often it can be spotted on the ground, in grass, where its colours form a perfect camouflage. In early spring, the singing of the European green woodpecker is particularly noticeable. If you hear loud laughter coming from the tops of the trees, you have just heard it.
