Middle spotted woodpecker
Dendrocopos medius
The medium spotted woodpecker is slightly smaller than the great spotted woodpecker and although, at first glance, it looks very similar, there are a lot of differences between these birds. In case of the medium spotted woodpecker, both sexes have a red cap, the bottom part of the tail is of soft red colour, and the abdomen and breast have lines. In spring, one can often see the bird drinking the juice of trees. It has a slightly weaker beak than the other woodpeckers, so most often it makes hollows from dead parts of trees. The sounds emitted by the middle spotted woodpecker are strongly groaning, and the drumming of this species is very rare.
