Common coot
Fulica atra
Common coots are often confused with ducks. Their water-based lifestyle and the close presence of representatives of ducks in the Łazienki gardens can be misleading. Nothing could be further from the truth as the common coots belong to the Rallidae family, which means they are closer to the crane than the ducks. Their name originates from a bald, white little shield located above their beak. The legs of the common coots are extremely interesting. They are livid blue, and each finger has its own separate webbing which makes swimming easier. The common coots frequently build nests in the ponds of Royal Łazienki.
