Eurasian jay
Garrulus glandarius
The jay is the most colourful representative of corvids in Poland. This is the sky blue, striped mirror on the wings which is especially striking. The Eurasian jay is called the forest guard, because as soon as it faces a threat, it immediately raises the alarm with its screeching voice. The Eurasian jay loves nuts and acorns. By making hiding places for seeds it contributes to the spreading of oak, beech and hornbeam trees. The Eurasian jay imitates the voices of birds – it is particularly fond of the voice of the buzzard which it copies very well.
