Cornelian cherry
Cornus mas
The cornelian cherry is a plant featuring a habit resembling a dense and large shrub. It can reach up to 13 meters in height. The cornelian cherry has distinctive leaves that are matte on top, while their bottom is glossy. The plant flourishes even before it has grown leaves, during early spring – then, it can be recognised by its spherical inflorescence in the mustard-yellow colour. In autumn, slightly elongated, sour red fruits develop due to the high proportion of tannins in their composition. The fruits of the cornelian cherry are used to make preserves or fruit liqueur.
