Common hornbeam
Carpinus betulus
The common hornbeam can reach 30 m in height, its trunk is of grey colour with characteristic lighter stripes running along the trunk. These marks resemble traces left by a rake. Older trees may have heavily carved trunks. The hornbeam wood is extremely hard and durable. The plant itself tolerates trimming very well and it is often used to form hedges or bosquets, which can be noticed in the Italian garden in the Royal Łazienki Park. Fruits are small, inconspicuous-looking trypterigium plants, in which small, ribbed nuts are hidden.
