Firebug
Pyrrhocoris apterus
The firebug is one of the most recognizable invertebrates of the Łazienki gardens. This bug, commonly referred to as a "tram driver", is widespread worldwide. It feeds on fruit, seeds, but also dead insects or plant juice. On the other hand, as most of the bugs, it is not attractive food for other animals due to the poor taste qualities and hard carapace. The common name of that insect is derived from the fact that, during copulation, the specimens of both sexes are attached to each other by the back of their bodies, which is also a great way to ensure that the female does not copulate with other males. The younger the specimen, the fewer black spots it has.
