One of a pair [see Anna Sachß, cat. no. 131]. The catalogues of the Stanisław August collection contain no record of the author of the pair of portraits nor the identity of the portrayed couple. …
The painting … depicts Jacob (Jakub) Sachß (1617–87), a goldsmith from Toruń who was accepted to the guild in 1648 and that same year appointed a master. The date 1674 on the inscription coincides with that of the year in which Jacob took up the office of town councillor, which he fulfilled in the years 1674–87 … .
Sachß is shown with the insignia normally associated with military or paramilitary formations—which the municipal and guild militias were. Craftsmen had the right to carry épées. The ceremonial bandolier and épée and partisan are certainly insignia of the sitter’s rank in the guild’s militia. [D. Juszczak, H.
