An inkstand is a set of writing accessories comprising, depending on complexity, a tray, inkwell, pounce pot, pen holders, candle holder, and seal box. Pounce or sand scattered over freshly written paper absorbed undried ink. Beyond their practical function, inkstands served a decorative purpose and, like snuff boxes, were sometimes presented as mementos to honour the recipient or mark a special occasion.
